How to Prepare Your Home Before a Renovation Begins

The weeks before a renovation starts set the tone for the entire project. Here's the preparation checklist we walk every client through.

Every renovation goes smoother when the home is ready for the crew on day one. These are the steps we ask clients to take before work begins, regardless of project size.

Clear the work zone completely

Remove furniture, wall art, and personal items from the renovation area and a reasonable buffer around it. Vibration from demolition travels further than most homeowners expect.

Confirm access and parking for crews

Let your project manager know about gate codes, HOA parking restrictions, or shared driveways in advance. Access delays are one of the most avoidable causes of lost time on a job site.

Set up a temporary routine for affected rooms

For kitchen and bathroom projects, we'll help you set up a temporary station elsewhere in the home — but plan for it in advance rather than scrambling on day one.

Protect pets and children's schedules

Construction noise and open work zones aren't safe or comfortable for pets and young children during active hours. Plan a routine that keeps them clear of the work area, especially during demolition phases.

Establish one communication channel

Every Emperial project comes with a single project manager as your point of contact. Save their direct line and route all questions through them — it keeps decisions and change orders documented in one place instead of scattered across text threads with different crew members.
